Tackling the Global Plastic Issue – One Toothbrush at a Time!

Within the past few days, it has been highly publicised that TerraCycle and the oral health company Colgate have partnered to create a free recycling programme to tackle the recycling of oral care products and packaging.

The programme will be a welcome relief to many people who have concerns over the difficulties around the recycling of some of these products, as many councils refuse to collect them.

The Colgate UK General Manager, Philp Durocher, stated for Dentistry magazine:

“The Colgate oral care recycling programme promotes sustainability, and we encourage people to take advantage of the programme and recycle their oral care products and packaging via the programme and tell their friends and family about this new recycling initiative.”

Laure Cucuron, General Manager of TerraCycle Europe, stated:

“Oral care products are used by all of us every day, so it’s one of the most frequently asked about types of products that consumers tell us they want to be able to recycle. So, we’re delighted to partner with Colgate to launch the Colgate Oral Care Recycling Programme which now enables everyone in the UK to recycle their oral care waste of any brand.”

How can Dental Practices help?

Colgate is encouraging Dental Practices to take advantage of this programme and help towards this global plastic issue by playing a part in the scheme and signing up as a public drop-off location for the programme.

TerraCycle has advised that for Practices not wishing to be a public drop-off location for their community, they can become a private collector by joining The Colgate Oral Care Recycling Programme.

Signing up to the scheme is very easy with practices merely having to make an account with TerraCycle. To sign up click here >

What waste can be recycled in the nationwide scheme?

As advised by TerraCycle

What happens to the waste?

Once collected, the oral care products and packaging are separated by polymer type, cleaned, and extruded into plastic pellets to make new recycled products.

How can Dental Practices help charities, as well as helping the environment by reducing plastic waste?

TerraCycle will be rewarding TerraCycle points for shipments over 200 grams which can be redeemed for £0.01 per point (100 points are worth £1.00) to the non-profitable organisation or school of choice, with points being able to be redeemed for charitable gifts.
