Course Details

  • This course looks at human anatomy and physiology in relation to sedation in dentistry.
  • You will be presented with a written course followed by an assessment with options for feedback and reflection.
  • Once you have achieved a mark of 80% or more, you will be presented with a certificate to download.
  • If you do not pass you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment.

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide learners with an overview of how anatomy and physiology relate to conscious sedation in dentistry.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of human anatomy and physiology relating to conscious sedation.
  • Define the terms anatomy and physiology.
  • Understand the features of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in relation to anatomy and conscious sedation.
  • Understand the features of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in relation to physiology and conscious sedation.
  • Recognize the anatomy involved in and sites available for venepuncture access.
  • Define the terms pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
  • Correctly identify two commonly used sedative drugs used in conscious sedation.
  • Explain the differences between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve supply.
  • Define the term respiration and how it is controlled.
  • Define physiological terms in relation to respiratory volumes.
  • Define the term hypoxia and understand the oxygen dissociation curve.
  • Describe the differences between adults and children in relation to metabolism, airway, respiration, and circulation.
