It provides the following elements in compliance with schedule 3 of IR(ME)R 2017.

General

  • Principles of radiological techniques.
  • Production of X-rays.
  • Equipment selection and use.

Fundamentals of image acquisition

  • Image formats, acquisition, processing, display, and storage.

iLearn recommends that you complete the full series of training courses in this subject to ensure you have the required information to support you in this area.

Completion of all five courses suitable for your job role complies with IR(ME)R and IRR requirements.

  • You will be presented with a coursebook followed by an assessment with options for feedback and reflection.

  • If you do not pass you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment.

Aims

This course aims to provide the dental team who take and have a role in the production of an X-ray image with information relating to the X-ray production and image formation, film image production, indirect and direct digital sensors, comparison of film and digital detectors, techniques for intra-oral radiography, techniques and limitations of hand-held X-ray units, and extra-oral imaging systems.

Meeting requirements in the IR(ME)R 2017 - Regulation 17 (Schedule 3), IRR 2017 - Regulation 15, and the 2001 Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-Ray Equipment.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Outline the process of X-ray and image production.
  • Define the mechanism of producing an analogue image using intra-oral and extra-oral radiographic film techniques and the processing procedure.
  • Explain the mechanism of producing a digital image using direct and indirect methods.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging and aspects of image manipulation.
  • Identify techniques for intra-oral radiography.
  • Identify techniques and limitations of hand-held X-ray units.
  • Outline the types of extra-oral imaging systems.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • The process of X-ray and image production.
  • The mechanism of producing an analogue image using intra-oral and extra-oral radiographic film techniques and the processing procedure.
  • The mechanism of producing a digital image via direct and indirect methods.
  • The advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging and aspects of image manipulation.
  • The techniques for intra-oral radiography.
