Aims

 This course aims to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco use and associated oral health issues. 

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Identify the compounds in cigarettes including the toxins in tobacco.
  • Discuss the harmful effects and potential risks of tobacco use.
  • Understand an individual's exposure to tobacco including the risk of developing smoking-related diseases.
  • Explain both the health and other benefits of smoking cessation.

After completion of this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • The link between tobacco use and periodontal disease.
  • The harmful effects of tobacco on unborn children.
  • NICE quality standards relating to smoking cessation. 
  • The range of nicotine replacement therapies and prescription medications available to assist with smoking cessation.
